Designed for MIT MUSEUM OceanS Open CallTidal Pulse is a facilitated participatory program that models ocean tides as rhythmic, interconnected systems.
Participants briefly wear a pulse oximeter, allowing their heartbeat to be translated into a simplified wave that becomes part of a shared projected tidal field. Each contribution persists and interacts with others, gradually forming interference patterns that reflect how multiple rhythms accumulate into complex systems. By linking human biological pulses to the wave dynamics that govern ocean tides, the program offers an intuitive, experiential way to understand planetary rhythms and humanity’s connection to the oceans they depend on.
The program is designed as a short-format, repeatable public event.
How it works
How It Works
Visitors wear a pulse oximeter (2–3 minutes)
Heartbeat translated into a wave signal
Waves layer into a shared projected tidal field
Patterns evolve as more participants engage
Educational & Artistic Value
Visualizes wave dynamics and interference
Connects human rhythms to ocean tides
Demonstrates accumulation and systems interactions
Accessible to teens and adults
