Breath with me
Respira Luminari
“All things are in-spirited through breath.”
— Anaximenes of Miletus, c. 500 BCE
Respira Luminari is a series of interactive light sculptures that respond to your breath in real time. My intention is to make the invisible visible.
Each sculpture comes alive only when you connect with it through a sensor, the same kind used in smartwatches to track heart rate variability and breathing patterns. My intention is to reverse the usual relationship between viewer and artwork: instead of you putting effort into looking at art and hoping it stirs something in you, the art is hardwired to you: it responds directly to your breath, the most basic act of being alive. When you breathe near the sculpture, it breathes with you, turning your inhales and exhales into shifting colors in real time. You become one with the piece through this connection as you're literally breathing life into the art, animating it with your presence.
Project is being developed during residency at 14C in Jersey City, October 2025 - January 2026.
